Standards Authority of India (FSSAI)
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has been established under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSS Act 2006), which consolidated various acts & orders
related to food licensing in various Ministries and Departments. The FSS Act 2006 subsumed various Central acts related to food business like Prevention of Food Adulteration Act,
1954; Fruit Products Order, 1955; Meat Food Products Order, 1973;
Vegetable Oil Products (Control) Order, 1947; Edible Oils Packaging (Regulation) Order, 1988; Solvent Extracted Oil, De- Oiled Meal and Edible Flour (Control) Order, 1967 and Milk and Milk Products Order, 1992.
The FSSAI has laid out the science based standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. Every food business activity from the wholesaler, manufacturer, distributor to retailer and a petty business operator must register for a food license under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. FSSAI has developed a seamless interface called "Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCos)" for registration of different food businesses under FSS Act 2006. A simple and interactive website of the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) enables the applicant to easily navigate the procedure for filling application for the registration of food business under the FSS Act 2006. There are two major steps for obtaining a food license for any food business activity.
The applicant must first obtain registration certificate before filing application for obtaining food license from FoSCoS of FSS Act 2006. The process for obtaining a registration certificate is to register the entity and select the kind of business (KoB) undertaken by the food business operators. The entire licensing and registration procedure, along with its prerequisites, is governed by the Food Safety & Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Regulations, 2011.
